An aging VxRail cluster sat at the heart of a Texas Panhandle county’s IT, and it had become a risk to daily services. Weaver delivered a turnkey county VxRail refresh. Then we moved the legacy equipment to a remote disaster recovery location.

What We Did
  • Planned the cluster replacement and DR relocation in detail
  • Replaced the aging cluster with a new Dell VxRail cluster
  • Brought a resilient production environment online
  • Relocated the legacy equipment to a remote DR location
  • Set up automated nightly backups to the remote site
  • Adapted in real time as challenges came up

The challenge: an aging cluster at the core of county services

This Texas Panhandle county provides essential services and infrastructure to its residents. Its VxRail cluster formed the backbone of county IT. However, that cluster was aging.

As the equipment got older, it posed a growing risk to county operations and to the services residents rely on. So replacing the cluster had become essential to keep services running without interruption. The county also needed a better way to protect its data. In addition, it wanted the ability to keep operating if production were ever disrupted.

Our approach to a county VxRail refresh

Weaver had supported the county on previous projects, and that history made us a natural partner. We drew on our Dell partnership, certified expertise and deep knowledge of the technology stack. Then we proposed a turnkey project with two goals.

First, the county VxRail refresh would replace the aging cluster with a new, resilient production environment. Second, instead of retiring the old cluster, we would put it to work as a disaster recovery resource at a remote location. That way, one project would solve both problems.

What Weaver delivered

  • New Dell VxRail cluster. We replaced the aging cluster at the core of county IT with a new, resilient production environment.
  • Remote DR location. We relocated the legacy equipment off-site, so the county can keep operating from a secondary location.
  • Automated nightly backups. Backups now run to the remote location every night.
  • Detailed planning. We planned every step of the execution before work began.
  • Real-time problem solving. When challenges came up, our team worked through them on the spot.

Results: a county VxRail refresh with a place to recover

The project replaced the county’s aging VxRail cluster and set up a new, resilient production environment. Nightly backups to a remote location greatly strengthened disaster recovery. Meanwhile, the county met its critical infrastructure needs without disruption.

Going forward, the county benefits from automated backups every night. It can also keep operations running from a secondary location if production ever goes down. Most importantly, the services residents depend on now rest on a stronger foundation.

A common challenge in county government

County IT often runs essential services on a single core platform that ages faster than budgets allow. For that reason, a replacement is a good moment to plan for recovery too. Existing equipment can often become the foundation of a secondary site. A county VxRail refresh on Dell Technologies hardware is one way to get both a new core and a place to recover.
