Students were vaping in campus restrooms, and staff had no way to see it happening. So Weaver deployed K-12 vape detection with an integrated Verkada system of sensors, cameras and cabling. Now staff get alerts and can respond in real time.
The challenge: a safety problem staff couldn’t see
The district is a Texas public school district with a growing student population across multiple campuses. Student safety sits at the center of how it runs its schools. It also looks for technology that makes the learning environment better.
However, students were vaping in campus restrooms. That exposed other students to secondhand aerosol and created a hard supervision problem. Traditional monitoring did not work, and administrators had no way to step in before incidents happened. The district also saw gaps in its physical security. Camera coverage was thin, and old infrastructure made it hard to react as incidents unfolded.
Our approach to K-12 vape detection
Weaver designed an integrated Verkada security solution around the district’s needs. The project combined Verkada hardware and software, careful sensor placement, high-definition cameras and structured cabling. In addition, our team provided installation support and consultation throughout.
Because Weaver handled both the technology and the cabling in-house, coordination stayed simple. One team owned the work from planning to cabling. As a result, the project caused little disruption to campus operations. Our team also worked with administrators on placement, calibration and training.
What Weaver delivered
- Verkada vape sensors. We placed sensors in restrooms so they send real-time alerts when they detect vaping.
- High-definition cameras. Intelligent Verkada cameras close coverage gaps and help staff lock down high-risk areas.
- Structured cabling. Our team ran the cabling and installed the hardware in-house.
- Single-platform management. Staff manage sensors and cameras together from one Verkada platform.
- Training and tuning. We trained staff on alerts and keep tuning sensors for coverage.

Results: K-12 vape detection staff can act on
Today, staff can actively monitor restrooms and catch vaping incidents as they happen. The district also gained new tools to secure and lock down high-risk areas when needed. School leaders say they are very satisfied with how the Verkada platform performs and how easy it is to use.
Weaver installed the system during the summer of 2025. Since then, the work has continued as our team tunes sensors for coverage. That way, the K-12 vape detection system keeps getting better as staff use it.
“This wasn’t just about cameras. It was about restoring safety and peace of mind. Verkada gave our team the tools they needed to act decisively, and our local presence allowed us to execute with precision.”

A common challenge in Texas K-12
Vaping in restrooms is a problem many districts face, in the one place staff cannot supervise directly. For that reason, K-12 vape detection works best when it pairs sensors that alert in real time with good camera coverage in common areas. Platforms like Verkada bring both into one place. That gives staff a way to respond without adding to their workload, so educators can stay focused on students.
