A West Texas county had a new CIO, no technology roadmap and a stalled plan for county GIS infrastructure. Weaver listened first. Then we helped define the architecture, hardware and sequencing the county needed to move forward.

What We Did
  • Listened to the new CIO’s concerns and goals
  • Reviewed where the IT team stood today
  • Scoped Dell PowerEdge R750 servers and PowerVault storage
  • Defined the GIS architecture and product requirements
  • Built a phased plan from planning to procurement
  • Stayed on as an advisor through the planning process

The challenge: a new CIO, a stalled initiative and no roadmap

This West Texas county was going through a major leadership transition in its IT department. A new CIO was stepping in. However, the outgoing leadership had left no clear direction behind.

The incoming CIO inherited a team with little clarity on current or future technology needs. Meanwhile, the county wanted to move forward with critical GIS planning. It needed help understanding what hardware a GIS solution would require and how to structure it. Without a vision or a technical roadmap, progress on county GIS infrastructure had stalled. So the new CIO needed confidence before committing to a complex, high-visibility project.

Our approach: listen first, then plan the county GIS infrastructure

Weaver stepped in early with consultative support. First, we listened carefully to the county’s needs and the CIO’s concerns. We also helped the CIO ramp up in the new role.

Next, we aligned our recommendations with the county’s long-term goals. Together, we defined a phased approach that made sense for both IT and leadership. It ran from planning all the way to hardware procurement. That gave the county a clear set of building blocks for modern county GIS infrastructure.

What Weaver delivered

  • Compute specification. We scoped Dell PowerEdge R750 servers as the compute foundation for the GIS platform.
  • Storage specification. We sized Dell PowerVault storage alongside the servers to give the platform room to scale.
  • Architecture and requirements. We documented the architecture and product requirements for leadership and IT.
  • A phased roadmap. We laid out the best sequence of steps, from planning through procurement.
  • Ongoing advice. The county bought the equipment through a different channel, and Weaver still stayed on as an advisor.

Results: county GIS infrastructure with a clear path forward

With a defined plan in hand, the county moved from a stalled initiative to a modern GIS foundation. Today, GIS data uploads and user access respond faster. In addition, the CIO and GIS operations work in step with each other.

Weaver did not deliver implementation services on this project. Instead, our value came earlier. Our guidance saved time, reduced risk and streamlined procurement. As a result, the county had a smoother rollout and a clear path for future projects.

“The county didn’t need us to sell them servers. It needed a partner to help a new CIO see the whole picture and make a confident decision, and that’s what we delivered.”

Joey Mendoza, Head of Sales and Marketing, Weaver Technologies

A common challenge in local government

Leadership transitions in public IT often leave new leaders with little documentation and urgent projects already underway. An outside, objective look at requirements and sequencing helps them decide with confidence before they commit money. For county GIS infrastructure, that means sizing compute and storage to the workload first. Platforms like Dell Technologies PowerEdge servers and PowerVault storage then give the county a foundation that can grow.
